Abstraction class work...
In class we were given a task of drawing and thinking about abstraction. In the photo above me and my partner had to decide on which is the most abstract photo and which is the least then put them into order. Next we was given a paper asking us about what attraction is and what we thought about the image taken. Then we had to draw our own version of the image.
In lesson we were given a task of finding abstract photos around the school area. I was paired with Anna and we found some photos we thought were abstract. we placed these photos in random order because we believed all of the photos were unique in their own way

The formal elements
Focus:
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
Shape...
In class we were given another chance to re take out abstraction photographs. This time we were told to focus on one main formal element. The formal element I focused on was shape.

Homelearning
My homework was to find abstract photos around where I live and outside.During the weekend I found 20 pictures which I believe to be abstract photographs.

Focus...
Our home learning task was to find 20 abstract images focusing on one formal element around our house or even outside.
My favourite image would be the first one because it is in focus but stands out from the rest because of the mixture of colours and objects around its surroundings.
EBI; the thing I could improve on is the focus on some of the photos as I feel its too blurred to really get a good understanding of what the photo is.

The two dark shapes hover above a small pack of lines and textures. There are smaller versions of the dark black circles sit above and below them. They are showed to be well balanced in the centre of the picture and seem to mirror each other. The blobs feature two eye-like slits, the shape of a sweet. They remind me of a postboxes with a sweets shape.
The layers of cut up images can give you a distorted view of the picture. In addition to this, The placement of the cut up pieces gives us a different image to what it actually is. |
Collaged photogram contact prints
www; The photographs came out clear and you can get kind of a clear image
EBI; Make the time a bit longer so the photograms does not come up as light.
The dark room...
Today in class today we were given a task of taking our photos from the previous lesson into the dark room and making Photograms. Firstly we placed our photos on top the photographic paper.Secondly we turned the light machine on and waited 8 seconds. Then we repeated the process another 2 times. This went from positive to negative as the printed picture was dark then after the process it went really light. My favourite picture was the second one as it came out more clear and less blurred. Above are some of the photos I have made in the dark room.

Photoshop
These are my steps for editing my original photo on the app photoshop.I like how the colours are very bold and bright which really stands out.I also like how my original image blends in with one of my abstract photos from the last photoshoot lesson. The thing could improve on is maybe choosing another element to mix with my photo. For example one that may make my photo darker or lighter.

Throughout the half term my task was to take 30 unusual, close up ,disrupted and out of focus images. The photos I have taken feature all 4 of these things.
WWW: This would be my favourite image because the shapes and shadows created by the building gives it an unusual affect to the picture. The one thing I would improve with this is maybe the focus and angle the photo is taken to make the picture better
EBI: The thing I would want to improve my my gallery of photos is add more distrusted images and I could try editing a few to make them appear more abstract and normal to the other photos.
Final selection of images for your Abstract photobook
I chose this photographs to go into my photo book because of the abstract and unique they are from all my other photographs. The order i will put them are from most unusual to a photograph you would see every day but ignore them. The boom design is also going to be different so it can fit into the factor of abstraction. I will only use 15 or less photos for my photo-book as if i use too many it will distract you from the idea of abstraction
The final board
Dafna Talmor
constructed landscapes
Dafna Talmor has made very unique and abstract photographs. This is the photo I have picked out of her gallery because it stands out the most to me. The picture looks like it has been constructed with two or more images which has been edited onto on another. This picture makes you think out side the box to understand what is happening in the picture. I can see a collage of mountains and maybe a sea merged together . The picture looks like it was originally one and then it was edited to make another photo. It looks like the sky, mountains and the sea.
The title ' constructed landscapes' gives the viewer an understanding to Dafna's artwork. The word constructed means to build or make something and her photos look like they have been constructed into something new. The pictures makes us believe that they have been edited to make the photos look more abstract. The title ' constructed landscapes' makes the viewer think that it was originally a normal landscape which has been constructed into something new.
The artist may piece together photographs of different locations to create a theory of abstraction in her photographs. She may piece a mixture of her artwork into one to make her images stand out and fit in with her given title ' Constructed Landscapes'. In addition she may piece them together to combine old negatives photos with new negatives to produce lines and gaps in a finished print.

'' Constructed Landscapes transforms colour negatives of landscapes initially taken as mere keepsakes through the act of slicing and splicing. The resulting photographs allude to an imaginary place, idealised spaces or as Foucault states, “a virtual space that opens up behind the surface”.

Constructed landscapes
In class today we was visited by a photographer called Dafna Talmor. We was given a task of creating 5 slides ( positive transparent slides) with a mixture of record tapes. I managed to make 5 constructed landscapes with a mixture of different textures and patterns. I gathered 6 different record tapes and placed them on a lamp and
In todays workshop, Talmor was telling us about how, and why she made her series "constructed landscapes". She was telling us when she went traveling she took many pictures of the view but didn't quite know what to do with them. Talmor was telling us she used negatives to cut up and construct these new images.
When we were making our images, we used a different method. We cut up 35mm positive film slides instead of negatives. When I was making mine I used negatives that were similar to each other so it made the image look like it could be real. Because the positives were quite dark we used a Lightbox, this helped seeing the whole image and where to cut exactly.

My work
Puzzled 'Em photoshoot
Puzzled' Em
The inspiration for this project came from seeing an old party game called 'Puzzled 'Em' in an exhibition in south east London. The curators had purchased unusual items from eBay and asked writers to respond to them. One of the objects was Dennis's Party Game, 24 cards with a key, a game of visual identification.
The idea of this 5 weeks of work is to take 10 unusual photographs and create our own version of the Puzzled' Em board game. The first lesson we was given a task of walking around the classroom and trying to guess all 24 pictures. These pictures were taken in weird angles to distrupt the meaning of the actual object. Final 10
Final 10 edited
These are the final images I have chosen for the Puzzled 'Em game cards. I decided to make them black and white also as I thought it looked better, I did this in photoshop. In order to take the pictures I used a camera and my phones flashlight to manipulate the lighting. Some pictures are harder to see what they are than others. The 1st image is a rolling paint tool that makes a noise when you blow through it and the original colour was green. The 2nd image is a small strainer. The 3rd image is a kitchen utensil, I liked this image a lot because whenever I moved the light the holes would move positions. The 4th image is rolled up string. I put my phones flashlight at the bottom of the string and it created the image to look more 3d and have more depth to it. The 5th image I'm not actually sure what it is. The 6th is a mask, this was mainly silver but had some yellow and green. The 7th image is a mechanics utensil. The 8th is a hair brush. The 9th is another mechanics utensil that was red. And lastly the 10th image is rolled up thread. I decided to use these photo's because they range in how hard it is to guess what they are.
Game instructions
The images should be spread out on a rooms walls or just spread out throughout a room. Then get into pairs and set a timer for 2 minutes and start the game. Each one you guess right is 1 point, so the pair that has the highest amount of points between 0-10 win.

About Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter was an American photographer and a early pioneer of colour photography. He was different to many other photographers he worked on something we would ignore for example raindrops on a window too an old fashioned car. He liked to work with colour because he would like to stand out from the other photographers.
His work....
Saul leiter
"A window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person".
~ Saul Leiter
I chose this quote because I think it bets describes his work. “ a window covered in raindrops “ is one of his most famous pictures and he saying that seeing that and taking an image of something you would see and ignore is more interesting and exciting than seeing a picture of something anybody else would pay attention too. This gives me a better understanding to what Saul would consider a good picture.

My Saul Leiter paintings
In class today we was given a task to recreate our own versions of Saul Letters work using paint and cartridge paper. We used water colour paint to contrast with his work as he likes to take pictures which are not as clear because they are though class windows with water droplets. I tired to create 3 of his pieces of work using the main colours featured in his photographs. My favourite photo would be my first one because I think it mimics the original photo the most.
